Excellent Idea Lacks a Tad on Execution – I loved the idea of composting my food scraps without actually having to build a compost bin. Anything to reduce what goes into a landfill PLUS makes a great plant fertilizer so I bought one.

Great solution for keeping food out of landfills, with some limitations – I use the Foodcycler to pre-process food waste before it goes in the compost tumbler during the 6 months each year that the weather is too cold for actual compost. What comes out of the Foodcycler is compact, doesn’t have a strong odor, and is safe to accumulate until the weather warms up enough to resume composting. (The output can also just be mixed into soil when the weather is warm enough, depending on your needs.) It’s impressive that however much we put into the Foodcycler it always seems to output the same thing, about the texture of dirt.

My New Favorite Kitchen Gadget!! – I got my unit yesterday and was eager to put it to use right away. There’s no assemble required. You’ll just need to add the caps on the charcoal filters in the back of the unit. I placed a full bucket of fruit and veggie scrapes in the unit and let it do it’s thing. I’m in a studio apartment so my kitchen doubles as office area. While working, I barely even noticed the unit was on because it’s really quiet. Quieter than my frig. The process time is about 5 hours but the end result is work it. Great amendment for your soil. I wouldn’t recommend applying the dehydrated scraps to your potted plants soil because the food scraps haven’t been broken down by microorganisms and could lead flies and rodent problems. What I did was mix the finished product in a bucket of soil and I will eventually add some worms to start a worm farm to assist with the breaking down of the food scraps. Overall I’m super satisfied with my unit and it works just like it should. I’m amazed at how quiet it is.

– Gave this as a 90th & 87th birthday present to my Mon & Dad (who are vegan & very environmentally friendly). They are thrilled – you’d think it was a toy train set they are playing with :-). Now I’m going to buy another one for myself as there is no compost pickup in my area and outdoors composting attracts to many bears, rats, etc.

– I received it yesterday, and ran it with chopped asparagus as 3-4cm and strawberry last night 8pm. at 9 am today, this machine was still running, so I stopped it and opened it. The food is still wet, not been dried at all. I am mad. it’s almost 13 hours.
